What is Gum Disease?
Technically speaking, gum disease is medically classified as an
inflammation of the gums. At the first sign of inflammation gingivitis should
be treated immediately and if left untreated it can lead to more serious
conditions such as periodontal disease or gum disease. Gum disease should be
treated immediately to prevent further oral complications. As an entry level
form of periodontal disease, gingivitis attacks the gum tissue, works its way
to the jaw bone and causes permanent damage including tooth loss.
What are the Signs and Dangers?
If you suffer from gum disease, some of the warning signs are:
- Mouth sores
- Bright red or purple appearance to gums
- Tender gums
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen gums
- Shiny appearance to gums
If gum disease goes untreated, it can lead to a number of other oral
infections and conditions including:
- Periodontitis
- Gum infection
- Tooth loss
- Trench mouth
- Jaw abscess
Gum Disease is fairly easy to diagnose and is caused by a buildup of
bacteria in the mouth but it is not the bacteria directly that cause the
problem. Bacteria will always exist in our mouths, but it’s an EXCESS of
bacteria that causes us trouble.
Treatment Options
By far the best immediate change you can make to treat gum disease
is to improve your oral hygiene and reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Catch gingivitis
early and it can be reversed and healed with proper oral hygiene. On the other
hand, if left untreated it could lead worsen and ultimately lead to tooth loss.
Below are tips to help fight gum disease:
- Replace your commercial toothpaste and mouthwash with Tooth Fairy’s All Natural Peppermint Polish. Brush gently in circular motions with a toothbrush that has soft nylon bristle to clean and massage the teeth and gums. Be sure to floss between your teeth, sliding up and down, following the curve of each tooth.
- Keeping a log of daily foods, drink, and medications that you consume on a regular basis will help keep control over your daily habits.
- Eat foods with antioxidant properties, like those containing vitamin E (include vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables) and vitamin C (include citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes) to help your body repair damaged tissue.
- Do not use tobacco related products since the chemicals from these products have direct access to your bloodstream.
- When dealing with gums be careful about extremely hot or cold foods and beverages. Lukewarm or cool foods and beverages would be preferable.
- Relieve the stress because stress produces the hormone cortisol, increasing the likelihood of inflammation not only your gums, but throughout your whole body.
